Beagles have always been great family dogs, but they have been the least boasted about until recently. Beagles are not commonly bragged about as being a family dog, they were not listed on family dog rankings. However, in the last few years more and more families and people have been showing off their love of Beagles in the family!

Best Qualities of Beagles That Families Love

Beagles Appearance — The Beagle has a keen sense of scent and an innate talent to chase and hunt. Beagles come mainly in 2 main sizes, between 13 to 15 inches and a smaller size, under 13 inches. They are a member of the AKC’s Hound Group. Despite a size difference, Beagles all look the same with droopy ears, long tails and a short coat. They are typically a combination of tan, black and white colours, although some are orange, black or tan with white coloration.

Beagles Characteristics — The Beagle is comfortable in an apartment or smaller space, but they can annoy neighbors if they frequently warn you about weird noises. As they are bright, they can serve as good guard dogs. Beagles have their roots in hunting and thus they have loads of energy and should be exercised to keep them happy. A long walk or playtime outside is perfect for them. It is not advised to let your beagle off the leash as they will follow interesting scents and trails and ignore all previous trainings and the owner.

Beagles get along famously with young children and other breeds, although they are more reserved towards felines. Beagles are full of energy and will show their adoration openly however they can turn sulky if their desires are not fulfilled. They can be sensitive dogs with a lot of personality, and can have their feelings hurt if someone even laughs at them. Kids should learn not to tease the Beagles keen awareness and emotions.

It is advised to send your beagle pup to training school to get them to learn commands. Beagles love to eat and aren’t picky, which can be great during training because they can be rewarded in a variety of ways. Beagles will even scavenge for scraps in the bins because of their passion to eat.

Beagles Health Problems and Grooming — Beagles don’t require a lot of grooming, but they should be brushed once a week for dirt and loose hairs. With plenty of exercise, their toenails will wear down on their own, but you might want to check on them at least once a month.

Generally, they are hardy dogs but heart problems and epilepsy can be a problem for some dogs. They might face a problem with obesity as they have a passion for treats. Nevertheless

Families choose the Beagle because they are a fun, easy-going, tolerant, gentle dogs. They are a medium sized dog breed. They are very active and naturally curious.

Beagles socialise well with children and other animals, or house hold pets. They are scent hounds and benefit from lots of outside time and scent based games and challenges. Challenging their mind also helps them be calm and easily manageable.

Their grooming needs are minimal. A brushing about once a week is adequate. Expect some shedding. Worse in the spring as their winter coat thickness thins in preparation for summer.

Some Challenging Beagle Traits

Although Beagles are wonderful family dogs they do have some challenging qualities. Among some of their less desirable traits are:

  • Need for MODERATE DAILY EXERCISE — if you are looking for a lap dog, this is NOT the breed for you
  • They can be stubborn — Training takes time and persistence
  • They are scent hounds — Sometime a scent will overwhelm their senses and even your commands! If you don’t have solid obedience training they can be a lot to handle!

They are a dog breed that also holds unique positive media influence because of popular celebrities that have owned them and Beagles who are cartoon super stars themselves.
